ABOUT THE SHOW
Bristol’s most unique Christmas show! An outdoor promenade adventure through the atmospheric illuminated woodlands of Arnos Vale Cemetery, with walking and seated elements, aimed at an intimate family audience.
Bristol’s favourite ‘Site Specific Theatre Masters’ (Bristol 24/7) Insane Root make their joyful return with a wild outdoor retelling of this deliciously dark, yet family friendly, winter tale. Bursting with poetry and song from acclaimed writer Saikat Ahamed (Three Kings, Strictly Balti) and composer Ellie Showering (Rumpelstiltskin, The Tempest), this magical production will linger in your imaginations for many years to come.
With a running time of approx. 55 minutes, this alternative festive treat will be performed by three teams of Hansels & Gretels, with a new show starting every 30 mins from 4pm.
Note: there will be a maximum of 10 performances per day, with a maximum of 4 shows to be performed by Hansel & Gretel, and 5 by each Witch/Dad due to a shorter track.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are casting three Hansels, three Gretels, and two Actor-Musicians to play the Witch/Dad.
We are looking for actors with strong singing and physical theatre skills, as well as those who are confident with audience interaction, families and immersive events.
Actors of all ethnicities and backgrounds are warmly welcomed for consideration.
Unfortunately, the site is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Male, playing age 18-25, any ethnicity
The elder brother, Hansel always feels like he’s responsible for everything. Imaginative but uncertain, he likes following the rules and keeping to the path. Deeply protective of (but very irritated by) his sister Gretel, Hansel has moments of both whimsy and petulance. Character age approx. 12. A bit of a dork.
Female, playing age 18-25, any ethnicity
The younger sister, Gretel is wildly imaginative and believes that by spinning round and round really fast she can blow all the bad things away. She inspires and annoys her brother, and is struggling with the loss of her mother. Together they tell stories that reimagine their lives, for both better and worse. She is confident, intelligent and adventurous, but sometimes needs to be reminded what is safe and sensible. Character age approx. 8.
*we are not interested in playing stereotypical “children”, but capturing the innocence and energy of their youth.
DAD / WITCH / MUSICIAN
Male, playing age 25+, any ethnicity, portable instruments preferred
A mysterious musical figure we discover in the wood. Doubles in as the witch and revealed as
Dad, finding his children. Struggling with the loss of his wife (the children’s mother), he is kind and a bit helpless. As the witch, bold imaginative, highly physical and a bit cheeky.
Strong singing ability required – both as solo and blending in harmony groups
